Assembling an engine isn’t easy work, and it certainly comes with a high-cost of failure. Spinning a $5 bearing can result in a few hundred dollars of parts and machine shop costs. A single, improperly gapped piston ring can cost several horsepower and inadequate piston to valve clearance––we don’t even want to think about that one.
The moral of the story is: It pays to do your homework before assembling an engine. Hindsight is 20:20, and it’s really easy to spot the problem once there's a hole in your cylinder block.
